The National Health Service (NHS) has launched the world’s largest study of a potentially game-changing blood test that hopes to detect more than 50 different types of cancer before symptoms arise.

From Monday, more than 100,000 volunteers are needed to supply blood samples at mobile test clinics around England to see how effectively the test works in the health system.

The Galleri test examines the DNA in a patient’s blood to see if any of it originates from cancer cells. Malignancy survival chances are greatly improved when cancer is detected early.

In a randomised control experiment, the NHS planned to recruit 140,000 volunteers in England to assess how well the test worked. The Galleri test will be performed on half of the participants’ blood samples right soon.
