Commonly used to decrease the level of power of an optical signal in a fiber optic communication system, an optical attenuator is an electronic device. Attenuation is also called transmission loss in fiber optics. Concerning the distance the signal travels in a transmission medium, it is the light signal intensity reduction. To limit the transmission of a digital signal traveling large distances, Attenuation is an important element. As it travels along with free space or optical fiber, an optical attenuator reduces this optical signal. Resistors are replaced with solid-state devices such as PIN diodes and metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) in variable optical attenuators (VOA). Producing an output optical beam with different attenuated intensities, VOA attenuates beam or light signal in a controlled manner. The power ratio between the light beam entering the device over a changeable rate and the light beam coming from the device is adjusted by the optical attenuator. To regulate optical power levels, VOA is usually used in fiber optic communication systems to prevent damage to optical receivers due to fluctuating or irregular power levels.
